Enabling Students with Diverse Learning Needs

Overview

5 Minutes of Digital Inclusion is a Goldsmiths-funded collaborative project between Goldsmiths, University of London and LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore.

I worked with Professor Dr Jennifer George, Head of Computing at Goldsmiths, and Dr Damaris Carlisle, Acting Head of Learning Centre at LASALLE, while collaborating with the Brand Manager at Goldsmiths.

The project aimed to create a learning platform for 2000+ staff members across the institutions to help them support students with diverse needs and disabilities.

Challenge

I was brought on board to develop a visual identity, edit videos, set up an accessible website and send out daily newsletters to the subscribers.

We had twenty-five 5-minute videos to be disseminated every workday for 5 weeks straight, and the scripts were developed by the researchers.

However, we did not have an established information architecture for the website or the contents, nor had we explored any visual identity options.

Execution

1. Visual Identity

I designed the logo by drawing inspiration from various accessibility logos, ensuring that the negative spaces in the letters ‘m’ and ‘n’ align seamlessly with the negative space between the legs of the human avatar icon.

2. Intro Animation for Videos

3. Website (Cards, Wireframe)

Outcome

The project was completed on time and all the newsletters were scheduled and sent successfully with an average open rate of 54.23% and click rate of 12.23% for 26 emails, surpassing the industry average open rates of 15-40% and CTR of 1-5%.

Reflection

It was a really great experience working with Dr Jennifer and Dr Damaris.

Given the time constraints and the scope of the project, making extensive changes wasn’t possible.

However, I think there is a lot of room for improvement in the video scripts to make them more fun and captivating.
